Cain Velasquez sentencing pushed back to March
The former UFC heavyweight champion's sentencing hearing was postponed from January to March, so Cain Velasquez won't know his fate until March. After being arrested in 2022 after a high-speed chase in which he allegedly fired multiple rounds from a handgun at a car carrying Harry Goularte, a man accused of molesting Velasquez's son at his mother's daycare, the 42-year-old retired fighter entered a no-contest plea to a number of charges, including attempted murder.
Velasquez's sentence and probation hearing has been rescheduled for March 24; however, his motions hearing remains planned for Friday, January 24. Velasquez was initially scheduled to go to trial for the accusations before entering a no-contest plea. He might be sentenced to probation or even life in prison, but the latter is extremely improbable considering Velasquez's plea agreement with the prosecution.
Specifically, the Santa Clara County District Attorney's office said that "he faces prison time" in the initial announcement regarding Velasquez's choice to enter a no-contest plea, which essentially suggests he's accepting punishment in the case without officially admitting guilt. After firing multiple shots from a.40-caliber revolver at the car carrying Goularte, Velasquez was first taken into custody; however, a bullet eventually hit Goularte's stepfather Paul Bender in the arm.
This resulted in non-life-threatening injuries for him. Following the conclusion of the vehicle pursuit, Velasquez was taken into custody without incident by the Morgan Hill Police Department and charged with a number of offenses, including attempted and premeditated murder. After being detained and repeatedly denied bail before being released on a $1 million bond, Velasquez spent eight months in jail. Following his release, Velasquez resumed his coaching duties at American Kickboxing Academy and continued to compete in professional wrestling. Velasquez most recently joined his longtime head coach Javier Mendes as manager of the Dubai club that competes in the Global Fight League.
