Canelo Explains Why He Won’t Give Benavidez A Fight
David Benavidez has been rude to Canelo Alvarez in his pursuit of a fight, which is why Canelo has not challenged him to a fight. Alvarez explains why he should support a fighter who employs such strategy (62-2-2, 39 KOs).
Canelo has been under relentless pressure from Benavidez to give him the fight he desires for the past few years. He has said that Canelo dove under his nose, cast doubt on his legacy, and brought up the fact that he had success sparring with Canelo's opponent, Dmitry Bivol.
Canelo's Ouster
If Benavidez had been ignored in his attempts to fight Canelo, most fighters would have given up. Despite competing at 175 pounds, he continues to mention wanting to fight him. His obsession with Canelo is unsettling to some of his admirers.
It demonstrates that Benavidez has become used to challenging anyone he wants to fight without anyone objecting. Upon meeting someone who is uninterested, he fails to mentally understand the situation and persists in continuing to pursue the person.
“When somebody approaches you like that, and calls you out like that, you don’t need to give them any money,” said Canelo Alvarez said to the Ring Podcast about David Benavidez. “At this point, I’ve fought with all the champions and all the best out there. I can do whatever I want now, and I don’t like the way he approached [to get] the fight.
“I think he’s wanted the fight, and he’s been respectful. ‘I want Canelo,'” said Alvarez about Terence Crawford having been respectful of him about his approach to get a fight against him.
“Yeah, people want to see the fight, and maybe they’ll see the fight. We don’t know,” said Canelo about a clash between him and Terence Crawford. “Maybe they’ll see that fight. I’m always open to good fights. He’s a really good fighter with good abilities and everything, and maybe we’ll see that fight. We don’t know yet.”
