Teofimo Lopez’s Alcatraz Ambition: Fight On The Rock?
Teofimo Lopez’s Alcatraz Ambition: Fight On The Rock?
The next bout for WBO light welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez is scheduled for June or July on Alcatraz Island, which is offshore from neighboring San Francisco. Teofimo's three-fight agreement with Turki Al-Sheikh would include this.
Devin Haney would be the most logical choice if Teo were to contest in the San Francisco region. Born in that city, he attracted a sizable crowd to the Chase Center in December 2023 for his bout with Regis Prograis. Given that Teo is already scheduled to face Jose Ramirez in May, he might be too dangerous for Haney to take on.
The Angle of Alcatraz
I grew up in the adjacent Emeryville neighborhood and have visited Alcatraz numerous times. Given that the ships can accommodate 700 people, it would take numerous ferry voyages to get a large throng there.
Unless they wish to put it outside the jail area, I assume the battle would be held in the exercise yard. Angel Island is close by, and the bay vista is breathtaking.
Since both Teofimo (21-1, 13 KOs) and IBF 140-pound champion Richardson Hitchins are from Brooklyn, New York, it is not the best place for them to fight a unification match. It would be a step away from their support base to stage the battle on the West Coast. West Coast supporters, who have the time to comprehend what Teofimo is rambling about, would find his East Coast rhetoric to be meaningless. California fans would consider his rambling style alien.
If Teofimo battles Hitchins in Alcatraz, it might be a nightmare. He will take the ferry back to the mainland of San Francisco to ponder the loss if he loses, which is highly likely. Returning would be a gloomy experience. It would be a beautiful setting for Teo to fight if he were supposed to take on another Steve Claggett.
Teo has been a mental mess in four of his previous six fights since 2021, and many fans believe Hitchins will be too strong for him. Since defeating Vasily Lomachenko in 2020, he has been a complete mess. Turki's desire to sign him to a contract startled me. It would make sense for Turki to sign him if this were 2020, but Teofimo has since appeared to be a space case. He was affected by that Loma fight.
Teofimo's first fight is anticipated to be against Hitchins. He will then face IBF welterweight champion Jaron "Boots" Ennis in October, and he will face the victor or loser of the Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney 2 rematch in early 2026. Teofimo facing the loser of the Garcia-Haney rematch in a loser's bracket is the most likely scenario.
