Can Jose Ramirez Derail Devin Haney’s Plans For A Big-Money Garcia Rematch?
Can Jose Ramirez Derail Devin Haney’s Plans For A Big-Money Garcia Rematch?
After a year-long hiatus, Devin Haney says he will return "better" on Friday to take on Jose Ramirez on DAZN PPV in Times Square, New York City. Because he won't have to deplete himself to 140 or 135 like he used to, he believes he will be stronger fighting at 147.
Devin is concerned about losing this fight against Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs), the former WBC and WBO light welterweight champion, even though he doesn't want to acknowledge it. Haney's 31-0 record wasn't built on this kind of opponent. He's a real fighter. Bill Haney must also be concerned.
The plan is for Haney to defeat a well-known opponent and utilize the win to generate interest in a rematch with Ryan Garcia. All of that is destroyed if you lose to Ramirez. Turki Alalshikh has not stated what Haney's fallback strategy will be in the event that Ramirez destroys him. To prevent him from being scrapped and dumped in the junkyard, some sort of salvage agreement must be reached.
Haney has talked extensively about his prior professional accomplishments in recent interviews, raising the possibility that he is attempting to increase his self-confidence by vocally reminding himself of them. Haney believes he should have three losses versus Ryan Garcia, Vasily Lomachenko, and Jorge Linares since many supporters believe he is overpriced.
Are You Living in the Past?
Devin Haney told DAZN Boxing, "I'm already solidified, two-time champion," building on his previous victories against Regis Prograis and George Kambosos Jr.
Because Kamboos was viewed by many fans as a paper champion and Prograis was 35 years old and not the fighter he had become by the time he faced Haney, those victories were meaningless. Haney could boast of being a "two-time champion" if he had defeated some formidable opponents, such as Gary Antuanne Russell at 140 and Gervonta Davis at 135 pounds.
It's a warning sign that someone is attempting to strengthen their mental fortification when they are talking endlessly about the past. Haney must have been more affected than most people realized by his loss to Ryan Garcia.
Given the stakes of the match, fans wonder if Ramirez can defeat Haney via decision. If it's up to the judges, Ramirez might have a very difficult time winning given the highly anticipated October rematch with Ryan Garcia.
The 32-year-old Ramirez has been in the sport for a long time and is undoubtedly aware of what he would be losing when he fights the A-side Haney. If he wins, he will have a lucrative bout versus Kingry.
Both must win on May 2nd, as Turki Alalshikh has previously stated. Devin has been assigned the more challenging bout against Ramirez, the 140-pound former WBC and WBO champion.
Haney's main advantage in this bout is that Jose just lost to Arnold Barboza Jr. in November of last year. Even though he didn't lose as badly as Devin did against Ryan, he was nonetheless vanquished and picked out. He has therefore undergone thorough screening. They would have chosen Subriel Matias or Gary Antuanne Russell if they had wished to choose someone with whom Haney would have significant issues.
