Matt Brown explains why he’s against UFC fighters announcing retirement
Long before he lost to Zhang Mingyang by first-round TKO in the UFC Kansas City co-main event, Anthony Smith declared his intention to retire from professional fighting this past Saturday night.
Because he trained in Kansas City for a large portion of his career and had his house in Omaha, Nebraska, just a few hours away, the 50-fight veteran arranged his retirement while coordinating the timing and venue with the UFC. Unfortunately, Smith's last battle ended with blood streaming down his face after being split open by an elbow, and Zhang then threw a flurry of blows onto the ground.
Although that wasn't Smith's preferred conclusion, another UFC legend Matt Brown thinks that's always what happens when competitors make such ostentatious statements while announcing their intention to retire following a bout.
On the most recent edition of The Fighter vs. The Writer, Brown stated, "Dana [White] has said it before, and I actually agree with him, if you're already thinking about it, you should just stop now." Something similar to it.
That's the reason I don't like it when men plot their retirement fight. I understand. If you've already got one foot out the door, you're likely going to be facing a guy who has two feet in the door. However, some individuals, like Robbie Lawler, handle it well and still go out there and get it done. Thus, there will be an issue.
