Josh Taylor Is Back: The Fight Must Be Won
Josh Taylor Is Back: The Fight Must Be Won
This Saturday, May 24, Josh Taylor will make his ring comeback after a protracted one-year hiatus in a must-win bout against Ekow Essuman at Glasgow, Scotland's The SSE Hydro. At 147, Taylor, the former undisputed light welterweight champion (19-2, 13 KOs), will make his debut against Essuman (21-1, 8 KOs), the #4 WBO and #14 WBA. This Saturday, DAZN will broadcast the event live.
Taylor's Crucial Comeback
Given that Essuman, 36, is not the best, Taylor should prevail in this battle if he has anything left.
"The Tornado of Tartan" Fans don't think Taylor has much left at 34 after he lost his last two fights. Since his conflict with Jose Ramirez in 2021, he has not appeared to be the same boxer. Taylor was severely damaged by that bout, and in his subsequent three fights, he has been a shadow of his former self. Josh should have a 0-3, but his record is 1-2 in those bouts. In their first bout in 2022, he defeated Jack Catterall via split decision after a contentious 12-round bout.
Although Taylor's welterweight rankings of #11 WBC and #11 WBO are meaningless going into the contest. In his rematch with Catterall in May of last year, he lost a 12-round unanimous decision in Leeds, England, due to poor performance. Prior to that, Taylor lost his WBO 140-pound title to Teofimo Lopez, who humiliated him with a 12-round unanimous decision. In that altercation, Teo made Josh seem horrible.
Taylor will be able to secure some bigger welterweight bouts against Conor Benn, Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney, and Jaron "Boots" Ennis if he defeats Essuman. He probably won't get into any of those fights. To have a chance against those fighters, Taylor will need to defeat someone respectable like Rohan Polanco, Eimantas Stanionis, Shakhram Giyasov, or Karen Chukhadzhian. On the other hand, Taylor might scare those guys away by defeating them. In order for those fighters to grudgingly accept to fight him, Turki Alalshikh may need to notice him.
He hasn't engaged in combat for a year. Gareth A. Davies, speaking to Sport Boxing about the Josh Taylor vs. Ekow Essuman match on Saturday in Glasgow, stated, "This is a fight for me, where Josh Taylor gets to show against a very strong, natural welterweight, who he probably sparred."
Because he will be there to be struck, Essuman is the ideal style for Josh to display his former form. Unlike when he faced Cattteral and Teofimo, Taylor won't need to search for him or follow him around the ring.
Is It Still Possible for Big Fights?
This is his chance to demonstrate his remaining resources and level of desire. There are some golden geese there for some major fights, and the welterweight division is currently a murderer's row. The two standouts are Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn. Gareth stated, "If you fight those two, there are big money fights, and both of them are viable fights for Josh Taylor, given his style."
Taylor is no longer in contact with Benn and Ryan. Those combatants will be concentrating on more significant battles. Taylor must work his way up to 147 from the bottom. Since that is the only way he can attract warriors like Haney, Ryan, and Benn to fight him, he cannot be scared to take chances against the toughest competitors.
He is a southpaw. He's incredibly clever, therefore I'm going to pick him on points. He will box when Ekow fights and engage when Ekow boxes. Gareth stated, "I simply believe Josh Taylor needs to go all out." Josh is competent enough, in my opinion, to demonstrate his abilities at welterweight and put up a few strong bouts before hanging up his gloves. I believe it will be his last if he doesn't have it.
Essuman would be embarrassed and made to seem awful by the Josh Taylor of 2017–2019. Lately, he hasn't performed well. Naturally, Taylor's battle with Teofimo and Catterall, two cunning combatants, is one of the causes of that. It would be difficult for anyone to face those people.
"At the moment, Jaron Ennis leads the division. A champion is Brian Norman. The division has Devin Haney. Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia. The divide is ablaze. Thus, if Josh Taylor wins on Saturday night, he will appear refreshed. He might wind up in two big contests in this class. In the UK, Josh Taylor vs. Conor Benn is huge," Gareth remarked.
After defeating the 36-year-old Essuman, Taylor will once more not be getting a battle from any of those well-known names. To get those kinds of battles, he needs to do far better than this. It's doubtful if Taylor can defeat the opponents he needs to win the major bouts.
