Dana White praises Dustin Poirier and says that UFC 318 was made just for his retirement fight.

Dustin Poirier wants to ride off into the sunset after his next bout, which will be the main event of UFC 318 in his home state of Louisiana. For the previous few years, the former interim lightweight champion has been hinting that he could retire, but now Poirier is ready to make it official. His farewell fight will be in New Orleans on July 19. The show marks the first UFC pay-per-view card in New Orleans in a decade and UFC CEO Dana White stated the entire event was designed to give Poirier a suitable sendoff for his career. White told WDSU in Louisiana, "Dustin Poirier is a big star for us all over the world." "He has done a lot in the sport. To be honest, this is for him. This is for him. He wanted to complete his career with his last bout in New Orleans, so here we are. For years, Poirier has wanted the UFC to come back to New Orleans. His last fight there was in 2015, when he knocked out Yancy Medeiros at a UFC Fight Night show. Poirier never won an undisputed title during his time in the UFC, but White called him one of the best fighters to ever step into the cage after he spent the last 15 years fighting for the organization between the UFC and WEC. White stated about Poirier, "Actually, he's ranked No. 5 in the world right now in the lightweight division." "He's been in the top 10 in the sport for a long time." He's done a lot. "He's one of the best of all time." Thousands of guys have battled in the UFC, so I don't know where I could rank him, but he's one of the best ever. Poirier's opponent is also getting ready to fight Holloway for the third time. Poirier won both of their prior fights. He submitted Holloway when he initially joined the UFC in 2012, and then he won a majority decision over the Hawaiian when they fought again in 2019 for the interim lightweight title. Now Holloway wants to make up for those losses by fighting Poirier in his home state for the "BMF" title. White stated, "Poirier is fighting Max Holloway, who is also one of the best fighters of all time." "It should be a great fight."
