Why Callum Smith is a dangerous opponent for David Benavidez
Why Callum Smith is a dangerous opponent for David Benavidez
Benavidez (30-0, 24 KOs) would have a hard time with this fight. Last April, he became the WBC light heavyweight champion when the former champion, Dmitry Bivol, chose to fight Artur Beterbiev in a trilogy instead of defending his title against him. Benavidez was the WBC interim champion at the time.
Benavidez, who is 28 years old, took a lot of hits from David Morrell in their last battle on February 1. He might have lost if the Cuban fighter had boxed him in the opening half of the fight instead of going toe-to-toe. Morrell took the lead in the second half, beating up a weary Benavidez.
Smith (31-2, 22 KOs) isn't good enough to box Benavidez. So, if they fight, he's going to battle him up close and make it a war. It will be another hard fight for "The Mexican Monster," but if he can take Callum's body shots, he might be able to get him out of there.
Benavidez's Weakness: Body Shots
Smith's body punching is what makes him dangerous for Benavidez. Last year, David fought Oleksandr Gvozdyk and damaged him in the body. That is clearly Benavidez's weak point.
Most of the people he fought during his career went after his brick-like skull, which was easy to hit because he didn't have any resistance. It doesn't work. Benavidez can handle headshots well. Even though Morrell knocked him down late in the fight, he got back up and fought hard. If Callum can hit Benavidez in the body, he could be able to bring him down and end the fight.
Promoter Wants a Deal in the UK
Sampson Lewkowicz, the promoter, told The Ring that a battle between Anthony Yarde and Callum Smith against Benavidez is a nice fight. Eddie Hearn may decide whether or not to strike the agreement for Benavidez vs. Smith. If the deal is right, we're also ready to go to England and battle Smith.
Hearn's Issue: Smith's Future
It would be a surprise if Callum's promoter, Eddie Hearn, goes ahead with this fight. If he loses, he won't collect the millions he might get by facing the winner of Dmitry Bivol vs. Artur Beterbiev III. If you're Hearn, do you really want to put Smith in with Benavidez and lose that guaranteed huge paycheck against the winner of the Bivol-Beterbiev trilogy? If I were Hearn, I wouldn't do it.
Benavidez is also taking a chance. If Smith knocks him out with a body blow, he can say goodbye to the money he would have made against Bivol or Beterbiev. Those guys are too elderly to wait for Benavidez to come back after losing against Callum.
Bivol has also made it clear that he doesn't want to fight "The Mexican Monster." Some people think that the sparring match they had has anything to do with why he doesn't want to fight him. Benavidez says he damaged Bivol with a lot of punches.
Smith's age might have something to do with this battle. He is 35 years old and just got out of a really tough fight with Joshua Buatsi last year. Callum won by a unanimous decision after 12 rounds, but there were times when it looked like Buatsi was going to knock him out.
Buatsi hits harder than Benavidez. Smith might not be able to handle all the punches from "The Mexican Monster," though, if he can't stop him with his body attack.
