Julianna Peña says she got hurt when fighting Kayla Harrison at UFC 316.
Peña (13-6 MMA, 8-4 UFC) lost her bantamweight title to Harrison in the UFC 316 co-main event earlier this month. She was taken down and submitted in the second round. Peña talked about her problems in fight camp in an emotional interview. She almost thought about quitting.
Peña told "The Ariel Helwani Show" on Tuesday, "I had a lot of injuries before that fight." In that way, it wasn't a positive camp for me since I knew I was going into the fight with a big disadvantage. I thought about pulling out, but it wasn't awful enough that I had to. I knew I could get through it.
"But it's strange that my coaches probably didn't tell me how bad things were, because if they had, I might have thought more about not competing. No, I don't regret competing. I spent too much time. I've taken too much time away from other people, including my daughter, my coaches, and their families. So I don't feel bad about competing. "I just wish I could have competed in better conditions."
Peña talked about how bad her injuries were.
Peña added, "I broke my thumb on my training partner about the second week of May, and it was swollen." "It seemed like someone hit me in the hand with a hammer, and it was hard to hold on to. It's still incredibly hard to hold on to things and have grip strength right now. But then, on May 29, I fell pretty hard in the octagon and tore my elbow and broke off a lot of bone chips. This made it impossible for me to straighten or bend my arm all the way. I worked on it for a few days before I left for fight week, but every day it became worse and worse.
"It looked like someone hit me in the back of the elbow with a baseball bat." It was extremely bloated, and the MRI and x-rays indicated a rip and a lot of bone chips in the rear of it. So going into a fight 10 days after having a tear like that and all those bone chips is just awful and incredibly painful. It's hard to throw a punch, stretch, grab, or bend. It hurts all over. In July, I'm going to have surgery for that, and I'm going to fix it.
