Former world champion Francisco ‘Chihua’ Rodriguez (40-6, 28 KOs) of Mexico upset previously unbeaten Galal Yafai (9-1, 7 KOs) of the UK to claim the WBC interim world flyweight title. The main event took place Saturday night at the bp pulse LIVE Arena in Birmingham, England. Rodriguez set a rapid pace starting in round one where he clearly hurt Yafai who had to hold on. Yafai had his moments as well, but Rodriguez matched his rallies each time with much more volume and hurt Yafai in rounds seven and ten. Rodriguez was finally able to drop Yafai in round twelve. Yafai had to do a lot of holding to make it to the final bell which he did. Both fighters suffered cuts above their left eyes caused by accidental headbutts. The official scorecards read 119-108 twice and 118-109.
