Is Canelo Alvarez Overlooking His Contenders?
Is Canelo Alvarez Overlooking His Contenders?
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, the WBA, WBC, WBO, and IBF Super Middleweight champion, is 62-2-2 with 39 stoppages and is from Guadalajara, Mexico. He will defend his title against Terence "Bud" Crawford, the WBO Interim Super Welterweight champion, who is 41-0 with 31 stoppages and is from Omaha, Nebraska, on September 13 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Alvarez has beaten super middleweight contenders in his last four fights. His most recent battle was against IBF champion Cuban William "Indomable" Scull, who was 23-0 and fought in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, a month ago.
Before that, "Canelo" also won by decision against Super Middleweights Edgar "The Chosen One" Berlanga (22-0), Jamie Munguia (43-0), and Jermell "Iron Man" Charlo (43-0).
Before his last battle on August 2024, Crawford had never weighed more than 147 pounds. He fought Israil "The Dream" Madrimov, the WBO interim World Super Welterweight champion, at the BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, California, and won by scores of 115-113 twice and 116-112.
So, in September, it will have been thirteen months since Crawford's previous fight. If he comes in at about 154 pounds, he will have lost about thirteen pounds. Canelo's last fight was at 167 pounds.
Crawford, who is now 37 years old and has been a Lightweight, Light Welterweight, and Welterweight champion, should be a heavy underdog against "Canelo," who is 34 years old.
Canelo hasn't lost since May 2022, when he fell to Dimitrii Bivol, who is currently 24-1 and has titles in the WBO, IBF, and IBO in the Light heavyweight division.
Has Crawford earned a title fight at super middleweight, or is he just searching for a big payday that "Canelo" seems to bring to the bout?
"I have the style. I have the abilities and the heart, and I'm not going to sit around and play games with Canelo because he won't play games with me. Ring Magazine asked Terence Crawford what he thought of the fight, and he stated, "It's going to be a good fight, and I'm excited."
"It's not because I don't like Canelo at all. I like Canelo. Crawford stated, "I've been watching him for a long time."
