Amy, Askren's wife, gives an update
Former UFC fighter Ben Askren still has a way to go, but there have been improvements in his condition.
Amy, Askren's wife, posted an update on her personal Facebook page on Tuesday that said he is "increasingly aware." Askren is now officially on the lung transplant list, but his other organs are "OK" and there is "a path forward."
Amy stated, "As of late last night, Ben is officially on the transplant list." "Please pray that he gets stronger and stays stable while he waits, and that they find a great match for him and he accepts it without any problems." Also, please pray for the donor and his family. Ben is going to have to make a big change, but our family is so grateful that his other organs are okay and that there is a way forward (prayer emoji). He is becoming more alert, but he can't look at his phone or respond to texts yet. I hope he can be there in a week or two! We also hope that he will be able to converse while wearing a trach soon.
On Monday, Askren even mouthed that he wanted a coffee. Even though Askren's loved ones were still not allowed to drink caffeinated drinks, the situation felt normal to them.
"Yesterday he kept saying something, and we finally figured out he was saying coffee!" (He can't have it yet, haha) Amy wrote. "Thank goodness he asked for something so typical. I'm so glad his mind is healthy, and I can't wait to see him again. We are also very grateful for the wonderful community we have, which includes close friends, acquaintances we haven't seen in 20 years, and even strangers who have reached out to share their own stories or pray. Thanks."
Askren, who is 40 years old, was hospitalized weeks ago with a bad case of pneumonia. His wife told him the news on June 7. He was on a ventilator and sedated as of June 17.
The news had a lot of people in the combat sports world talking. Many fighters, wrestlers, and the UFC sent their thoughts and prayers to the former ONE and Bellator champion. On June 14, the UFC aired a segment wishing Askren well.
A T-shirt fundraiser has been started to help pay for Askren's medical expenditures and his work to help high-level athletes.
Askren stopped fighting MMA in 2019, but he came back for one boxing match against Jake Paul in 2021. Askren is still very active in the wrestling scene and recently joined Hulk Hogan's Real American Freestyle. Many people think he is one of the best amateur wrestlers in U.S. history.
