Schofield vs Farmer finds path to Stevenson or Zepeda
Floyd Schofield Jr. is ready to earn his shot again after backing out of a Shakur Stevenson clash earlier this year.
Schofield pulled out with a mystery illness, missing out on trading with Stevenson for the WBC lightweight title on February 22.
Golden Boy and Turki Alalshikh penciled Stevenson vs Schofield in for the Beterbiev vs Bivol 2 undercard. However, the clash fell through when Schofield told Alalshikh he couldn’t fight as only days remained.
Alalshikh drafted in replacement Josh Padley, who took a comprehensive Stevenson beating.
Schofield and his father, Floyd Sr., sought out a top opponent and landed a clash with Tevin Farmer. The winner is lined up to battle Stevenson if he comes through a clash with William Zepeda in July.
Most Valuable Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions confirmed Schofield vs Farmer for the undercard of Jake Paul vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on Saturday, June 28, from Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
“Kid Austin” puts his 18-0, 12 KOs record up against the former world champion. Farmer, who is 33-8-1, 8 KOs, steps into the ten-rounder after giving Stevenson’s undefeated opponent Zepeda all he could handle for two bouts.
Many believe Farmer did enough to win at least one, if not both, bouts with Zepeda.
Junior knows Farmer won’t be easy, but is confident of victory.
“First of all, I want to thank Golden Boy, MVP, and DAZN for the opportunity to come back on this stacked card,” said Schofield.
“Sharing the ring with former world champ Tevin Farmer is a huge opportunity to silence those who doubt me and my skills. I know that I will come out with the win.”
Farmer added, “Kid Austin’s about to learn—my skills are different than anything he’s ever seen. I’m knocking him out to teach him a lesson.”
Schofield vs. Farmer adds to a packed undercard of contests for Paul vs. Chavez Jr., which sees WBO and WBA cruiserweight champion Gilberto Ramirez defend his title against Yuniel Dorticos.
Former UFC champion Holly Holm returns to boxing on the card to battle undefeated Yolanda Vega.
The rest of the confirmed bill features Avious Griffin (17-0, 16 KOs) vs Julian Rodriguez (23-1, 14 KOs), Raul Curiel (15-0-1, 13 KOs) vs Victor Ezequiel Rodriguez (16-0-1, 9 KOs) and Naomy Valle (14-0, 9 KOs) vs. Ashley Felix (7-3, 1 KO) on the preliminary card.
Nakisa Bidarian, co-founder of Most Valuable Promotions, aired his views on the DAZN PPV card.
“We built Most Valuable Promotions to give rising stars the platform they deserve. Saturday, June 28, is a perfect example of that mission in action,” said Bidarian.
“The Jake Paul vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. event is stacked with future champions. We’re especially excited for Avious Griffin and Naomy Valle to make their highly anticipated MVP debuts on this global event.
“They’ll join Floyd Schofield, who will command the attention of the boxing world with his return and rising Mexican standout Raul Curiel. This DAZN pay-per-view is going to be non-stop action; do not miss it.”
