Michal Cieslak methodically pounded Jean Pascal to a fourth-round finish yesterday in Quebec, resulting in the exact kind of mismatch we anticipated from the WBC's odd choice to have Cieslak fight Pascal for their interim cruiserweight title. The only other occasion Pascal (37-8-1, 21 KO) went above 190 was when he beat hockey enforcer turned UFC veteran turned would-be boxer Steve Bosse in 2018. Pascal is 42 years old and definitely not a cruiserweight. Until Pascal shelled up a little too long and the referee stepped in, Cieslak (28-2, 22 KO), a truly capable opponent whose only losses came against Ilunga Makabu and Lawrence Okolie, continued to inflict pain. But the WBC just ordered a rematch between Badou Jack and Noel Mikaelian, with the condition that the interim titlist defend his title against Yamil Peralta, so the 36-year-old Pole won't be getting a shot at the entire title just yet. As that situation settles, Peralta, who is a very reliable operator, should make for a terrific scrap with Cieslak.
