Tom Aspinall: reveals next opponent is booked
Tom Aspinall: reveals next opponent is booked
Tom Aspinall made it plain during his long break that his objective was always to become the undisputed UFC heavyweight title, even if that meant fighting Jon Jones. After Jones retired, which only lasted two weeks, Aspinall went to Las Vegas to talk to UFC authorities about what he should do next. He concedes that Jones was clearly the largest and most important fight on the list of possible opponents, but he thinks things will start to change in the division again since he aims to stay a very busy champion. "The heavyweight division isn't exactly on fire right now," Aspinall told Adam Catterall when he got back to England. "From a name point of view." I believe the talent is there. But if you look back five years or more, the name value in the top 15 was amazing. We're talking about people like Fabricio Werdum, Cain Velasquez, Junior dos Santos, Mark Hunt, Alistair Overeem, Brock Lesnar, and more. Stipe [Miocic] and many others. When you look at the top 15, you think, "Wow, that's amazing." I look at the top 15 and think, "I haven't really seen these guys fight before," even though I'm a heavyweight. "I believe that will change in the next few years. I think there will be more huge contests in the heavyweight class. It's excellent that people are going to become more famous. We only need more up-and-coming heavyweights to do a little bit in the top 15. Aspinall is happy to hear that he will be back in the ring soon since the UFC has offered him a bout that he has already agreed to. “I have a fight now, which will be announced. Unfortunately, that's not my job,” Aspinall said. "But at least we have a date and an opponent to work for. Everything is fine. That makes me really delighted. Finally, I can start my career again. Aspinall will probably be back in the ring in October, November, or December, depending on where the UFC puts him on its schedule for the rest of 2025. The pay-per-view event in October will be in Abu Dhabi, and the UFC is likely to go to New York in November for an event at Madison Square Garden.
