Dana White shuts the door on Jon Jones headlining at the White House: ‘I can’t afford the risk’
Jon Jones ended his retirement barely two weeks after it started because President Donald Trump said he will host a UFC event at the White House in 2026. Sadly for Jones, it looks like he might not even get a position on that card.
UFC CEO Dana White has said many times that he isn't even thinking about matchmaking yet because the event is still a year away. White's reluctance to have Jones headline that event doesn't have anything to do with the fact that he might be able to contend for a title and then retire right after.
White says he can't trust putting Jones at the top of such a monumental exhibition because of Jones' troubled past.
"It's not even about him winning the belt," White stated regarding Jones at the press conference after UFC 318. "You know how I felt about him. I can't put him in large roles in big places and risk something going wrong, especially the White House card.
Jones is largely thought to be the best fighter of all time, but it's hard to overlook how things changed when he couldn't compete.
White never forgot that Jones had to fight Chael Sonnen on short notice when his original opponent, Dan Henderson, became hurt, which caused UFC 151 to be canceled.
Jones lost his title and was suspended in 2015 after being in a hit-and-run vehicle accident only weeks before he was supposed to fight Anthony "Rumble" Johnson at UFC 187. Jones came back and was supposed to fight Daniel Cormier again at UFC 200, but the bout was called off when Jones tested positive for a banned substance.
Jones reportedly tore a pectoral muscle while getting ready for a fight with Stipe Miocic. This pushed their fight back a full year before it actually happened.
White can't stop thinking about that history when he thinks about Jones perhaps coming back to fight and headlining an event like the one planned for the White House during the America 250 celebration in 2026.
White said again that he wouldn't talk about any fights or fighters for that card since it's too early to start preparing the lineup. White is only thinking about how to set up a UFC fight in the White House right now. He'll worry about making matches later.
White said, "That fight is a year away." "I'm not thinking about anything right now." By next July 4th, the terrain will have changed so much that no one knows what will happen. No one knows who will be on the card. What the main event will be or who will have all the belts. “It's not even worth thinking about right now because everything could be very different.”
