Bella Mir open to bout with Mya Lesnar to settle their fathers’ long-standing rivalry.
Bella Mir open to bout with Mya Lesnar to settle their fathers’ long-standing rivalry.
Bella Mir has always liked following in her father's footsteps, but being Frank Mir's daughter has given her a new job in her combat sports career.
The 22-year-old fighter has won awards in wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. She is now getting ready for her fourth MMA battle on Sunday and hopes to one day fight in the UFC. Mir is obviously making her own way, but she has really started to embrace the job of representing the next generation after her father was one of the best heavyweights in UFC history.
Mir told MMA Fighting, "I think a lot of people whose parents were really great, like my dad, want to make their own legacy." "But I love being a part of his [history], and I love that he will be a part of mine too, when he becomes one of the finest MMA trainers in the world, which I really feel will happen. I really think we have the same story.
"Sometimes I think, "I wish they would make a movie or something. This is so great." You just don't see it happen in real life. Your dad is a two-time heavyweight champion in the UFC, and now you've taken his place by winning all of this. I think it's really nice. I like that we have a legacy together.
Mir has big plans for her own career, and her dad has always been a big source of motivation and information as she learns, adapts, and gets better as a fighter. In fact, she says her father has told her many times that she is just as important to his history as any title belt or championship he won in his own career.
Mir really cares about that, but she's accepted the pressure that comes with having such a famous family name. Her biggest goal is to make her father proud.
Mir remarked, "I'm definitely starting to realize that I like being a part of his [legacy] more than making my own." "Making my own was my way of getting away from his shadow." But now I feel like [he's] bringing me up, and it's just amazing to be a part of.
Of course, Mir is part of a small group of athletes who come from a family of champions. However, MMA is still a relatively new sport, so it's only in the last few years that the sons and daughters of prior champions have started to build a name for themselves.
Mir's daughter Mya Lesnar is a great track talent at Colorado State. She just earned the national champion in the shot put. Her dad was a UFC heavyweight champion.
Bella gets asked about Mya Lesnar a lot because Frank Mir and Brock Lesnar fought each other twice in the UFC and split the fights. She understands why people are interested. Mir beat Lesnar in his first UFC fight, but Lesnar got back at Mir in the rematch at UFC 100 by knocking him out.
The heavyweights never got to meet again to finish the trilogy.
Bella would love to have the chance to settle the feud that never got finished in the UFC by actually fighting Mya Lesnar in the cage. This may make one of the most viral fights in history.
Mir remarked, "It's funny that you say that about Mya Lesnar. A lot of people have asked me if I want to fight her and do the Brock Lesnar-Frank Mir trilogy but with her as the daughter." "I know Dana [White] would totally agree with that if Mya were fighting. So, Mya Lesnar, if you ever hear this, you should train and we could have a little battle. That would be great. Who wouldn't want to see that?
"I'm like Mya, I just need to train for a year." She is good in sports. She'll get it done. She trains for a year? That would be crazy. To be honest.
Mya Lesnar is a great athlete in her own right, but she has never said anything about competing in the sports that made her father famous. He was an NCAA champion in wrestling and then won the UFC heavyweight title.
That so, Mir can't ignore the amazing chance that could be offered to them, especially because their fathers had a history together.
Mir responded, "That would really be crazy." "Maybe the world knew that she and I were going to finish that trilogy fight, so they didn't let our dads do it. That would be great. Honestly, I think I'd be more excited for that than everyone else watching.
Mir knows that no matter who she fights, more people will be watching her than the typical athlete. She has known this since the day she decided to pursue MMA.
The UFC is always on the lookout for future superstars, and Mir definitely fits that mold. She isn't afraid to be in the spotlight, though. Instead, she takes advantage of the chance and is grateful that people are already talking about her and how she could change the sport.
Mir remarked, "I feel like I've been under pressure my whole life because of who my dad is and being around him. I never feel the pressure; I just live in the moment and love what I do." "My dad is really good at keeping a positive attitude and mindset." We talk all the time, and he tells me how he has always taught me, "You're not in my shadow; you're my legacy." You have to deal with those demons before the fights. It's like saying, "Yes." Why not pay attention to them? Tell them you agree with them and that you'll show them incorrect.
"I definitely think that when I get to the UFC, I won't feel the pressure, but I appreciate that people want me to take that spot." I love to compete, and I love to do it in front of people. I know that the UFC is where I want to be.
