Grappling Over MMA: Embracing a New Chapter
At the 2025 IBJJF World Masters Jiu‑Jitsu Championship in Las Vegas, Demetrious Johnson competed in the Master 2 featherweight black belt division. After advancing by walkover in the first round, he faced Takuto Kako—a decorated Asian IBJJF champion—and was submitted with a knee bar from a 50/50 guard in the final minute, despite being ahead on advantages.
Notably, this loss was a rematch reversal, as Johnson had defeated Kako in 2024 and extended a gracious sportsmanlike gesture afterward.
Johnson is fully embracing his retirement from professional MMA. In a statement to reporters, he reaffirmed his contentment and clearly shut down any talk of a comeback.
Though UFC flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja called him out following UFC 310—suggesting a showdown to determine the “GOAT”—Johnson confirmed he was offered $2 million for a return but turned it down, citing no interest in fighting again
