Luke Rockhold says he might retire: "I can't keep taking hits like that."

Luke Rockhold might have fought in combat sports for the last time. Rockhold lost in a nasty knockout to Darren Till at Misfits Boxing 22 this past weekend. This led to a lot of demands for him to retire. Rockhold wrote on social media on Tuesday, "It's time to work on my golf swing." Rockhold was asked on The Ariel Helwani Show if the post meant he was done fighting, but he wouldn't say for sure if he will fight again in combat sports. Rockhold replied, "I'm 40 years old, and I can't take shots like that." "I want a future for myself, and I have a lot of good things in the works, so that's pretty much it—it's about that time." So there's not much left to do. I've done a lot in this sport. I have won my championships. I've done bare-knuckle fighting, karate combat, boxing, and jiu-jitsu at the hardest level. I can compete with the best of the best, but I think it's time to take a break from competing. Rockhold has only fought a few times in the last five years, and he hasn't fought under MMA rules since his final UFC bout in 2022. Rockhold has tried his hand at bare-knuckle boxing (where he lost to Mike Perry at BKFC 41), Karate Combat (where he beat Joe Schilling), and now pro boxing since that fight, where he lost to Paulo Costa by majority decision. He has a few reservations about his fight with Till, noting that after taking a strong punch early in training camp, he couldn't spar as much as he would have liked. That might have had something to do with the final result, since Till knocked him out in the third round. Rockhold said of the knockout loss, "It's not a pretty one, that's for sure." "I haven't taken shots like that before. That is definitely one of the worst I've had. This is boxing. You're loading up and sitting down on massive shots. You can't affect the course of the fight in any other way. I thought about kicking for a second in the second round. It's hard. "I felt good, but there were some things I could have done better to get ready." I could have done a warm-up fight. You walk in and fight a man who has been boxing for a while and has had a few fights. Like I said, I'm 40 years old and don't have time to waste. I was attempting to get to those "big fights" that are pretending to be fighters. Rockhold didn't officially retire, but it sounds like he won't be fighting anyone who might hit him in the head for a while. If Rockhold really is done fighting, he leaves behind a great legacy. He won gold in the UFC and Strikeforce at 185 pounds and beat well-known fighters like Chris Weidman, Michael Bisping, Lyoto Machida, and Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza. What will Rockhold do next? He isn't sure, but he is convinced that he isn't done trying himself. Rockhold added, "I'm still going to chase myself." "I'm still going to push myself." There are a lot of different things, and training will always be a part of martial arts and my life. It's a way of living. There are many various kinds of competition, but there always has to be the actual battling competition. I love to push myself in numerous ways. I like to skate, surf, and do jiu-jitsu.
