Danny Garcia slated for Oct. 18 retirement bout against Daniel Gonzalez
Danny Garcia, a former two-division champion, will keep his promise to return to the ring. He will fight Daniel Gonzalez on October 18 in Brooklyn's Barclays Center, where he has fought many times before.
Garcia (37-4, 21 KO) was the best super lightweight in the early 2010s and a big name in the welterweight shark tank in the last few years of the decade, but he hasn't had a great fight since beating tough fighter Adrian Granados in 2019. He has only fought three times in almost five years. He lost by decision to Errol Spence Jr., then won by decision over the badly worn Jose Benavidez Jr., and then lost by stoppage to Erislandy Lara last September, which was the first time in his career that he had been stopped.
"Swift" is now 37 years old and will try to get one more win at Barclays, where he has won seven of his nine fights since 2012.
Garcia remarked, "The fans have supported me the whole way since I first fought here. Brooklyn feels like my home outside of Philly." "There's nothing like a big fight night at the Barclays Center." I had to make this concert for the fans to show them how much I've cherished them all along. The best way to say goodbye is to fight here one more time and give them a great night of boxing with a lot of up-and-coming young talent. On October 18, the DSG concert will be back in Brooklyn!
Gonzalez from Queens (22-4-1, 7 KO) hasn't won any big fights, but he has lost a few of semi-notable ones. In 2019, he lost a UD to Chris Algieri, and two years later, he lost a majority decision to Petros Ananyan. He sat out all of 2023 but came back to win two club-level matches, including his first 10-round decision since 2019.
Gonzalez remarked, "I've been working hard in silence, locked in that gym, and waiting for my chance." "Now it's here. At Barclays Center, I'm going to fight Danny Garcia, who will be in the Hall of Fame. I didn't come merely to show up; I came to shock the world and show how amazing I am. It's time for "Gallo" on October 18.
Most notably, Top Rank heavyweight Damian Knyba was on the undercard for the undefeated up-and-comers.
