Lewis Crocker is the new IBF welterweight champion
Today in Belfast, Lewis Crocker earned his first world title. He claimed the vacant IBF welterweight title in a fight that was disputed against Paddy Donovan. There was no disqualification in this fight, but there will be a lot of talk over Crocker's split decision win. Even though the Belfast native knocked Donovan down in the third and fifth rounds, it felt like Donovan (14-2, 11 KO) won the fight in every other round. One judge gave the fight to Donovan by a score of 115-111, which means Donovan won nine rounds. The other judges gave it to Crocker (22-0, 11 KO) with scores of 114-112 and 114-113. Bad Left Hook unofficially gave Donovan the win with a score of 115-111. Crocker stated, "Nobody gave me a chance in this fight, nobody." "I thought I was picking my shots well..." I believed I was hitting the more painful shots. I think I fought a tremendous battle and showed everyone that I can box. But I have a lot of respect for Paddy. I've always said that Paddy is a terrific boxer, and he'll be back. Crocker wants to fight Conor Benn next. Benn is set to fight Chris Eubank Jr. in a middleweight rematch in November. He remarked, "I think Conor Benn is a huge fight for UK fans." "I have a lot of respect for Conor Benn; I think he's a great fighter. It would be a lot of fun for the fans. From the fans' point of view, it's a huge fight for the UK. Eddie Hearn was conciliatory about the fight's outcome because he still works with both men. He added, "Everyone had it all over the place" as he talked about the scoring. Hearn said that Ryan Garcia, Rolly Romero, Devin Haney, and Teofimo Lopez may all be opponents for Crocker, along with Benn.
