Suman Mokhtarian, a former UFC fighter, died in a gang shooting in Australia.
Suman Mokhtarian, a two-time UFC fighter and Ultimate Fighter 27 cast member, died in Sydney, Australia, after an alleged gangland shooting.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported that paramedics treated a guy in the Riverstone suburb for gunshot wounds on Wednesday evening, local time. The man died at the spot. Following the propagation of the story on social media, the Herald confirmed that Mokhtarian was the victim of the shooting.
"It's very brazen, and it's a shame that this is happening in our community," Riverstone Police Superintendent Jason Joyce said, according to the Herald. "You'd assume that in a residential area, people could walk the streets at that time of night and be safe, but we believe it was a deliberate attack.
"My heart goes out to the family of this victim, and certainly any of the people that witnessed it, [it] would have been a horrific thing to witness, and it's certainly not something we tolerate in the community."
Police are also looking into a number of car fires in the area that could be related to the shooting, with one witness telling the Herald that a man suspect may have shot out of a red Audi.
Mokhtarian, 33, was a well-known personality in the Australian MMA community. In addition to his professional career, Mokhtarian worked as a coach for several fighters at the Australian Top Team gym and promoted the Urban Fight Night organization, which is based in Sydney. Following a brief run on TUF 27, Mokhtarian competed twice as a featherweight in the UFC, losing to Seung Woo Choi and Sodiq Yusuff, the latter being his final fight in 2019.
In April 2024, ESPN reported that Mokhtarian was supposedly the subject of an assassination attempt. The issue became so extreme that New South Wales police intervened, cancelling an event at which Mokhtarian was supposed to coach.
Mokhtarian's brother Ashkan, who went 0-2 in the UFC, was previously imprisoned for cocaine supply in 2023.
