Hand injury forces Fundora to postpone title defense
On October 25, Sebastian Fundora was scheduled to defend his WBC junior middleweight title against Keith Thurman. However, owing to a hand injury that Fundora sustained while training, the fight has been postponed.
Sampson Lewkowicz, the manager of Fundora, and representatives from Premier Boxing Champions confirmed the injury and postponement with ESPN on Friday. Additionally, they stated that the entire event will be postponed.
"Fundora will return in January 2026," Lewkowicz said in an interview with ESPN.
The "PBC on Prime" pay-per-view fight event was scheduled to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and Fundora and Thurman were scheduled to be the main attractions. As soon as the severity of Fundora's hand injury and the amount of time it would take for him to heal is determined, representatives from PBC expressed their desire that the bout might be rescheduled as quickly as feasible. There will be a rescheduling of the co-main event that was originally supposed to take place between Stephen Fulton, the current featherweight champion, and O'Shaquie Foster, the current WBC junior lightweight champion. It is the second time that Foster-Fulton will be rescheduled after they were first linked to fight in August on a potential Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach match that ended up not materializing. This fight was supposed to take place in August.
Fundora, who has a record of 23-1-1 with 15 knockouts, had wanted to compete for a third time in the year 2025. His knockout victories this year include victories over Tim Tszyu and Chordale Booker, and the bout against Thurman would have been a high-profile title defense for "The Towering Inferno."
With a record of 36-1 and 23 knockouts, Thurman was looking to win the junior middleweight championship for the second time. In March of last year, Thurman had an injury that prompted him to withdraw from a battle for the WBC title against Tszyu. Fundora, who was able to pull off the upset and win the belt, took over for Thurman. Since 2022, Thurman has only competed once, and that was in March 2025, when he defeated Brock Jarvis via technical knockout.
