Uisma Lima is blitzed by Jaron "Boots" Ennis for the first round stoppage.
Since 2014, Wil Esco, an assistant editor at Bad Left Hook, has been reporting about boxing for SB Nation.
In his super welterweight debut, Jaron "Boots" Ennis (35-0, 31 KO) wanted to make a statement, and if nothing else, he did it quickly. Boots stopped Uisma Lima in less than two minutes in the first round, dominating him (14-2, 10 KO).
Early in the battle, Boots lunged on Lima and put him down clean after giving him a clean shot that shook him up. After that knockdown, Lima would struggle to get back up, but Boots was ready to leap all over him, and he did just that, landing Lima hard for the second time in less than two minutes of the fight. Lima would stand up again, but Boots would attack him with another barrage of blows, and the referee had to intervene to protect the weaker Lima from more abuse.
According to Boots' post-fight interview, he accomplished what he had to do in this battle and that everyone already knows who he will be going up against next, Vergil Ortiz.
KO-5 Guido Vianello Alexis Barriere: This was the undercard's high point, as both heavyweights gave it their best and kept the action going for the duration of the bout. Although Vianello (14-3-1, 12 KOs) was clearly the bigger and stronger puncher in the bout, Barriere's skill and dexterity allowed him to hit Vianello frequently and cleanly. The issue for Barriere (12-1, 10 KOs) was that Vianello's strength soon weakened his defenses, and in the fourth round, Vianello would finally get the better of Barriere, who was fortunate to survive that round because of the bell. However, Vianello would score the stoppage at 0:26 of the following round with another powerful blow that put Barriere out for the count.
Smalls Tahmir UD-10 Jose Roman: Although the judges submitted official scorecards of 98-91, 96-93, and 95-95, the decision itself wasn't terrible. Tahmir Smalls (16-0, 11 KOs) defeated Jose Roman (14-2, 6 KOs) by unanimous decision points on at least one broader scorecard than some would feel comfortable with. Roman survived the round and had many strong moments in the second part of the fight, but Tahmir Smalls started the bout pretty hot and almost ended it in the third round when he caught Roman clean with a right hand that almost had him out. The knockdown proved to be the difference as BLH won the bout for Smalls by a mere one point, 95-94.
Dennis Thompson, SD-6 Sean Diaz: Dennis Thompson (8-0, 5 KOs) won the DAZN opener by establishing a quick pace in a six-round bout that left Sean Diaz (9-1, 2 KOs) exhausted early. He used a lot of unnecessary showboating and holding to try to make the audience believe he was doing better than he actually was. Although Thompson's performance wasn't particularly outstanding, it was sufficient for him to proceed from this point on, even though the judges' split decision victory with scores of 60-53, 56-57, and 57-56 was arguably closer than it should have been.
