B.J. Penn ordered to take mental health evaluation
UFC Hall of Famer B.J. Penn has been legally ordered to undergo a mental health assessment to determine his fitness and level of penal responsibility in his ongoing criminal court cases.
On Wednesday, Judge Peter Kubota of the Hawaii Third Circuit Court reached the decision that Penn would have to go to court for charges of family violence and breaking a protection order.
According to Hawaii News Now, which first reported the development, Penn was present in court for the hearing and pushed back against Kubota's request for a mental health assessment.
The results of the exam could have a big effect on what happens and what is feasible in Penn's court case.
Since Memorial Day weekend, Penn has been arrested five times. The judicial battle started when Penn, 46, was first jailed in May on allegations of abusing his family. He allegedly pushed his mother, Lorraine Shin, into a car and took her mail. In June, he was detained twice for breaking the protective order, and again in September.
Penn has been posting strange things on his social media pages lately, some of which indicate that his family members are not who they say they are.
Penn's family members have told the court that they think the UFC star might have Capgras syndrome, a rare mental illness that makes people think they are someone else. It is known to be linked to brain traumas.
