Daniel Cormier learned the hard way

Daniel Cormier learned the hard way that even private talks can be caught on video. Before UFC 321 this past weekend, the Hall of Famer talked to heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall one-on-one before his battle with Ciryl Gane. After the interview, Cormier grabbed Aspinall aside and praised him even more, adding that he might have a great run in the division, especially when he thought about the possible matches coming up. Cormier said during the talk that Jailton Almeida "can't fight" as he got ready for a possible No. 1 contender's fight against Alexander Volkov on the same show. In the end, Almeida lost a close decision despite getting a lot of takedowns but not doing much damage. Cormier said on Good Guy/Bad Guy on Monday, "I was literally trying to tell him you could be on the verge of something really special right now." "In that statement, I was saying that Jailton was going to fight you. The fight isn't as dangerous. I could have told Tom that better. "To be honest, I was a little upset that Tom and the others put that out." When you lean in and chat gently to someone, I believed that was a private interaction that should stay between you and the athlete. I believed it was Embedded, and I know that Embedded would never do something like that. Aspinall put the video on his own YouTube account. It showed what he was doing to get ready for the fight and all the effort that goes into fight week, such the several interviews he did, including the one with Cormier. Aspinall never said why he recorded the chat with Cormier or why he made it public, but he did say that the former heavyweight and light heavyweight champion praised him for perhaps being an all-time great heavyweight. Cormier responded to his criticism of Almeida, who is still a top 10 heavyweight but has lost the two biggest fights of his career, against Volkov and Curtis Blades.
