Mikaela Mayer is now a three-division world champion, having defeated Mary Spencer in Montreal to claim three super welterweight titles.
Mayer (22-2, 5 KO) dethroned Spencer for the WBA title, as well as the vacant WBC and WBO crowns, which Cecilia Braekhus recently won and relinquished. The judges scored the bout 98-92, 98-92, and 100-90 in favor of Mayer. Bad Left Hook unofficially shut out Mayer, 100-90.
Mayer, 35, still owns the WBO welterweight belt and says she's not sure what weight she'll fight at next, although she's open to 147 or 154.
"I think the most important thing is I have options, and that's great in boxing," she told me. "I need to go back and review it with my team." I'd want to do both, including defending (at 147 and 154). "I think I'm a natural 147 pounds."
Mayer also praised Spencer, describing her as "a heavy-handed girl," and noting that 154 was "definitely different."
The 40-year-old Spencer (10-3, 6 KO) was a fantastic amateur who still has talents, and she had an unusual height advantage over the 5'9" Mayer, who used to compete in the 130-pound bracket, where she earned her first world title gold as a professional. But Mayer simply had a clear advantage in tactics and execution, and Spencer and her team appeared a little lost trying to figure out the fight after "being bigger" didn't pay off, which was obvious rather fast.
Spencer is now 3-3 in her previous six fights, while Mayer is on a three-fight winning streak after a disputed loss to Natasha Jonas in 2024.
Mayer's biggest fight at 147 or 154 is a potential undisputed welterweight bout with Lauren Price. At 154, the only title she lacks is the IBF belt, which is held by fellow American Oshae Jones
