‘Sugar’ Nunez vs Emanuel Navarrete unification in the works
The already-proposed and highly anticipated super featherweight title unification battle between Eduardo "Sugar" Nunez and Emanuel Navarrete is nearing completion.
According to Mike Coppinger of The Ring, the Matchroom-promoted match might take place on January 24 in Phoenix, but Top Rank, Navarrete's promoter, must first finalize the details before Charly Suarez can "step aside" as Navarrete's mandatory challenger.
Navarrete (39-2-1, 32 KO) faced Suarez in a no-contest on May 10 in San Diego. The fight was originally ruled a technical decision, albeit a narrow one, in Navarrete's favor, before being modified to a no-contest on June 2.
The 30-year-old Navarrete has world titles in three divisions (122, 126, and 130), and he attempted to win a fourth title at lightweight in 2024, but lost to Denys Berinchyk. He's 1-1-1 with a no-contest in his past four fights, dating back to 2023, but he's still one of the most consistently entertaining fighters and a big name at 130 pounds, not to mention he still retains the WBO title.
Nunez (29-1, 27 KO) is a relative newbie to the sport's upper echelons, having won the vacant IBF super featherweight gold in Japan in May, 18 days after Navarrete and Suarez fought. On September 6, in Los Mochis, Mexico, he made a successful first defense against Christopher Diaz, after which Navarrete entered the ring and the two cordially discussed unification.
The 28-year-old Nunez would be fighting his most well-known opponent to date, in what would be his biggest fight to date, and an opportunity to truly establish himself as a top super featherweight.
For what it's worth, January 24 is also a proposed date for Manny Pacquiao to return to action, which would likely push Nunez vs Navarrete back a week if confirmed, but the Pacquiao deal is far from certain at this point, with Manny stating that his team is in talks with Floyd Mayweather for a 2026 rematch, as well as Vasiliy Lomachenko for a possible exhibition, and there's still talk about him fighting Rolly Romero for the WBA welterweight title.
